As Easter is coming up this Sunday, I want to recommend the book "Story" by Steven James. He knows many people attend church only on Easter and therefore only hear sermons on the death and resurrection of Jesus. It doesn't click with them because they don't know the story leading up to that which began in the Garden of Eden thousands of years earlier with the first sin. He summarizes the essential message of the whole gospel from Genesis to Revelation. He does so in a way that is fresh, raw, convicting, mysterious, and poetic. His text is interspersed with poems that are incredibly poignant. Here is an example (untitled):
judas betrayed you for thirty pieces of silver.
forgive me for all the times I've done it
for free.
yet you've chosen to call me friend.
help me to live like it.
i'm both captured and set free by
the mystery of your love.
enigma.
